Spring Forward Empowers Students with Engaging Fall Programs

The month of October saw the return of Spring Forward’s dynamic programming, which launched with an exciting lineup of Fall Intersession and After-School offerings in partnership with the Rock Island/Milan School District (RIMSD). These initiatives, designed to enrich student experiences and foster personal growth, provided unique learning opportunities for over 100 students during the Fall Intersession from October 7–11.

Fall Intersession Brings Learning to Life

During Fall Intersession, students explored a range of activities through partnerships with community organizations, making learning both active and hands-on. In collaboration with Rock Island Parks and Recreation, Illowa Council/Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois, and the Figge Art Museum, students took part in activities like Beginner Swimming Lessons, Fall Sports, “Scouts” and “Creative Arts” themed camps. These experiences exposed students to new skills, from archery and flag football to canvas painting, hip-hop dance, and puppetry with Eulenspiegel Puppet Theater Co.

The week was filled with opportunities for growth, creativity, and exploration, including STEM projects, tent-building, service learning projects, and more. Student volunteers from Augustana College were also on-site to support staff, adding an extra layer of mentorship and encouragement for all participants.

After-School Programs Offer Targeted Academic Support

On October 21, Spring Forward’s After-School Programs began at four RIMSD locations—Frances Willard, Rock Island Academy, RICMS, and Thomas Jefferson—as well as the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. With a focus on reinforcing academics, these programs provide small-group and 1-on-1 tutoring led by Certified District Teachers and dedicated volunteers, including Rock Island High School’s “Grow Your Own” Teacher Program, Augustana College, and Southpark Presbyterian Church.

In addition to academic support, students also benefit from outreach programs led by community partners, receive nutritious meals thanks to support from Nourish, and participate in swimming lessons. These components ensure that students’ needs are met holistically, making this year’s program more impactful than ever.

Expanding Reach and Lifting Up Learners

With more than 175 students currently engaged in After-School Programs, Spring Forward is committed to expanding its reach and impact. Plans are underway to extend programming to Longfellow Elementary starting in January 2025, just in time for the 3rd quarter. This expansion allows Spring Forward to continue addressing skill gaps and providing essential support to some of RIMSD’s most vulnerable students.

Spring Forward’s Fall programs are a testament to the power of community collaboration and the positive effects of enrichment and academic support on students’ lives. As the program grows, it remains dedicated to empowering every learner with the tools, confidence, and enthusiasm they need to succeed.
