Senior Spotlight: Ywa Hay Paw
In 2012 Spring Forward started its first ever school-based after school program. Prior, all after school programs had operated out of local churches. The school based program was at Frances Willard Elementary School and focused on helping ELL students with reading, writing and socialization. The program operated three days a week and served children in first through sixth grade.
It’s hard to believe but the inaugural year first graders are now Seniors!
Let’s catch up with one of those seniors, Ywa Hay Paw!
“When I first attended Spring Forward I was in first grade. Some of my teachers were Mrs. Katie, Mr. Steven, Mrs. Alannah, Mrs. Sophie, and Mr. Mike.
One of my favorite memories from Spring Forward was meeting new people that will have an impact in my life.
After I graduate I plan on going to college and major in elementary education because all my life I’ve been surrounded by kids and I have a passion for them.
My advice to the younger ones (at Spring Forward) is to put yourself out of your comfort zone because you will not get anywhere in life if you stay in your comfort zone! You don’t learn from things that makes you comfortable. But, you learn from new things that are uncomfortable to you.”
From her previous after-school teacher: Ywa Hay was always a bright light in the after-school program. She had a ton of energy and loved sharing stories about her day. She helped the more shy students feel comfortable in the program. Ywa Hay taught us about the Karen culture and introduced us to her family where we learned so much about Karen State and Thailand. As much as we tried to teach her we truly believe she gave us the best gift by sharing her life story. She was a difference maker as an elementary student and we’re excited to watch her pursue her college degree!
