Volunteers Help Spring Forward Thrive
The media center is abuzz with activity every Tuesday at the Spring Forward Afterschool Program at the Rock Island Center for Math & Science (RICMS) thanks to the ongoing presence of a group of longtime volunteers from Grace Church in Rock Island. Armed with storybooks and enthusiasm, the gentle voices and warm smiles of the volunteers create a welcoming atmosphere where kids feel comfortable and eager to listen.
The program not only fosters a love for reading but also provides a sense of companionship and mentorship for the children. “The volunteers bring their own experiences, which helps them build relationships with the kids,” said Julie Hansen, RICMS teacher and Spring Forward veteran. “It’s really neat to see how well everyone gets along.”
Preparation is key, and Julie and Grace Church liaison Kris Leinicke communicate each Tuesday morning about the number of volunteers that are needed for the afternoon. Usually there are 10-15 volunteers on any given Tuesday afternoon, and Kris serves as a back-up if a volunteer can’t make it.
As Tuesdays are literacy days, Julie prepares packets for volunteers by picking out a book of the week, a word activity and a writing prompt. Before the end of the session the students share what they wrote. “After school time is just as important for students and we make good use of the time we have with the volunteers.”
“Volunteers from Grace Church PC(USA) and the greater community are excited to participate in this worthwhile reading program. We have veteran volunteers who participated in reading programs held at the former Good Shepherd and South Park Presbyterian Churches, as well as eager newcomers.” said Kris.
Through this simple yet profound act of volunteering, the volunteers inspire a love for reading and a community that transcends generations.
