Better Together: Spring Forward and World Relief

How do you manage English language classes and programs for families who are new to our country and community?

This was the question and challenge for Spring Forward when it adopted the Family Literacy Program in 2017. The outreach classes had previously been managed by Black Hawk College before Spring Forward took the lead. “We wanted to see the program carry on but our focus had been out-of-school time programs. It was a different challenge. We had success with amazing staff and volunteers but also knew we needed help,” said Executive Director Dan McNeil.

Thankfully, World Relief stepped up and a transition plan was created for them to take the lead. Their staff coordinates the program for adults, teaching English language skills and helping students integrate into the Quad Cities community with the support of volunteers, partners, and guest speakers. Spring Forward stayed on board to provide child care and education on site so parents can attend and focus on learning.

Spring Forward Staff Christine Englebrecht stayed on through the transition and has led child care program for the past five years. Currently there are ten children attending and she designs their days to include practicing routines, teaching, and playtime. Her goal is to help them prepare for school. She cherishes her role and said, “I try to share with them things about life in their new country in supportive and encouraging ways.”

For the parents in the program, Christine said, “When I think of how they have come to a new country with a new culture, climate, and language, they have  left behind much of who and what was familiar. I admire their courage. Learning English is such an asset to their well-being, comfort, and happiness. And I can help provide care for their young children so they can.”

The Spring Forward child education program is funded through support from the Rock Island-Milan School District 41. World Relief manages and funds adult education with program support from volunteers and partners including St. Ambrose University, Augustana College, the Rock Island Fire Department, Nest Cafe, Figge, Rock Island Public Library, Skiles Driving School, Metrolink, WQPT, and QC Botanical Center.
