Harmonious Journey

In the realm of after-school activities at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, there exists a hidden gem that not only ignites a passion for music but also fosters holistic development in students.

For the last three years, the Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO) and Spring Forward have partnered to bring students individual violin instruction. The QCSO provides instruments and instructors. Spring Forward helps recruit students and provides after school staff on site.

The students are introduced to the instrument in second grade, and are able to build on their skills each year with their instructor. There are currently three classes of violin students. The weekly instruction provided by the QCSO not only ignites a passion for music but also cultivates discipline, teamwork, and creativity among the young participants.

“This is a true collaboration and authentically serves students that we would not have reached otherwise,” said Chelsea Sammons, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO). “The students in this after school program are getting a head start over a traditional school orchestra program.”

“It’s not a ‘one and done’ each year,” said Dan McNeil, Executive Director of Spring Forward. “The students continue to build on their skills each year and really begin to master the violin at an early age.”

The other hope is that the students cultivate a passion for playing music that extends to sharing with their family. As students embark on this harmonious journey, they not only refine their musical talents but also cultivate essential life skills that will serve them well into the future.
